The Power of Staying Focused as an Entrepreneur

I once mentored an entrepreneur at the start of her journey. She was passionate about her business and brimming with ideas—qualities every entrepreneur needs. However, each week, when I asked her what she planned to focus on, she would list numerous, often conflicting, priorities: launching new products, pursuing several initiatives, and working on an array of projects.

With a small team and limited resources, it was evident she was spreading herself too thin. Having been in that situation before, I could easily identify the signs.

Each week, her updates were the same—jumping from one task to another without making substantial progress on any single initiative. By the end of our mentoring period, as I had anticipated, her progress was minimal.

This experience highlights a common challenge many entrepreneurs face: the shiny object syndrome. The temptation to chase every opportunity can be overwhelming, especially in the early stages of building a business. New ideas often seem exciting and within reach, but the reality is that they require far more effort and resources than initially anticipated.

The Trap of Doing Too Much

When you’re chasing too many goals at once, your attention becomes fragmented. You may feel busy, even productive, but without concentrated effort, nothing moves forward meaningfully. A fitting Chinese proverb captures this perfectly: “If you chase two rabbits, both will escape.” This is usually interpreted to mean that someone who doesn’t prioritize their goals will end up achieving nothing

This lack of focus often leads to wasted time, energy, and resources. Instead of building momentum in one area, you find yourself constantly starting over, leaving a trail of half-finished projects.

The Lesson of Relentless Focus

During my time working with a multinational fintech company, I observed how they approached product development. Customers frequently requested new features, but instead of trying to satisfy every demand, the company prioritized perfecting its core offerings. They focused on ensuring a few essential features worked flawlessly before expanding their product suite. This relentless focus was a key factor in their success.

As entrepreneurs, we can learn from this approach. By honing in on one initiative or product, you can channel your energy into doing it exceptionally well. Once that initiative is stable and delivering results, it becomes easier—and safer—to expand into new areas.

The Value of Focus

Focusing on one thing doesn’t mean you’re limiting your ambition; it means you’re being strategic about your time and resources. Here’s how you can adopt a focused approach:

1. Define Your Priorities: Identify the one or two initiatives that will have the most significant impact on your business.

2. Set Clear Goals: Break down your priorities into actionable, measurable steps to track your progress effectively.

3. Resist Distractions: Be disciplined about saying no to new opportunities that don’t align with your current goals.

4. Iterate and Expand Strategically: Once you’ve achieved success in one area, leverage that momentum to explore new opportunities.

Why Focus Matters

Building a business is a marathon, not a sprint. Success often comes from doing fewer things better, not from trying to do everything at once. As Steve Jobs once said, “Focus is about saying no.”

Entrepreneurship is about turning potential into results. To do that, you must dedicate your time and energy to the things that matter most. By focusing relentlessly on one initiative at a time, you can maximize your chances of success and set the foundation for sustainable growth.

Remember: Catch one rabbit first, then go after the others.
